They put all of the onus on the borrower, and none on the lender. In a normal loan, if your bet didn't pan out, you lost money. But with a student loan, even if the promised career didn't materialize, you are still on the hook for the full amount. Why doesn't the lender take a hit, as with a normal loan?

There were 153 million taxpayers; each could be given a permanent $6137 tax deduction as an alternative, or perhaps half of it could go towards education and half to a $3k deduction.
