Those general ranks are administration positions. The US military is shrinking due to lack of recruits. 2024 was the first year the US Army met recruitment goals in years, and that's only because they lowered the recruitment goal by nearly 10,000 men. Due to years of declining recruitment the military already decided it was going to restructure to account for less personnel, and this is probably part of that. Combining different chains of command to reduce the highest paid administrative positions (the general officer ranks).

This won't really make much of an impact on the budget, though, since the vast majority of the US military budget is spent on armaments and equipment.

There are dozens of four star generals, and they typically occupy bureaucratic positions in the DoD. Reducing their number isn't unprecedented, in fact there's actually a legal limit to how many general officers are allowed in the military's branches, so reductions in the total are to be expected in order to avoid hitting the cap when you need to promote fresh blood to the top.

Yes, but it's more than that. Too much comand leads to a weaker fighting force. At the beginning of ww2 the french had one general for roughly every 750 enlisted. The germans had one for every 9,500 and the US had one general for every 8,500 or so approximately. Now we have a general for like every 1,200 or something like that. It causes stagnation and burocratic waste. The command staff has needed a trim for a while now.

3-star and 4-star general officer ranks are tied to specific administrative positions in the military and are not permanent ranks you can be promoted into. If the administrative divisions of the military are restructured, then there would be a corresponding reduction in the number of administrative posts as well.

When i did some research on this, I found that the amount of generals that the US has compared to the amount of soldiers it has means that every general is responsible for about 1500 soldiers. Comparing that to the actual military structure given, 1500 troops should be about what a lt colonel to a colonel should be in command or in charge of.

Compare this to WWII, where we had 2k generals for 12 million troops, or one for every 6,000 to fight one of the biggest wars in history and coordinating troops across continents without the benefit of satellite technology or modern conveniences it does seem grossly overdue just on a sheer numbers perspective.
