and after cursory research fuck all has been (dis)proven (as with most things concerning the prehistoric age, for obvious reason)
for me it makes absolute sense in some cases:
big herbivores need to eat pretty much constantly to keep their metabolism running, so being able to eat on the run while denying your prey of that option seems like a good strategy
traps are way more efficient for sure but at that point humans still lived a mostly nomadic lifestyle, which makes me think that there were times where trapmaking was simply not an option because of the time investment
and even the medieval hetzjagd still leveraged the comparably lacking endurance of many prey animals, granted, the counterpoint here is horses but that doesn't convince me earlier humans never had the same idea even if they had to walk it out
