It's not empathy, it's sympathy. Two completely different things. I'm extremely empathetic, but I have very little sympathy. I can understand why people think and feel the way they do. I can synthesize their emotions and thoughts within my headspace, to understand how they got where they did and why they do what they do. But that doesn't mean I feel sorry for them or care about them. Sympathy is a curse taught to children, especially white children.
