Long before that happens, if space is real, then we'll be hit by an asteroid or some other cosmic apocalypse. It's best to have colonies on the moon and in space with humans living there. Because if for instance there was a nuclear war and nuclear winter, or some other atrocity, humanity would survive on these colonies. If the colonies also have a seed bank and some way to replenish animal life using DNA, then all the remaining humans have to do is wait for Earth to heal after it's damage. Which it likely would to some degree. And then it can be repopulated.
Colonies in space ensure humanity survives no matter what happens on earth, and ensures there are humans after earth heals so that it might be repopulated if possible.

The thinking is that a star is so big, the pressure at the center is enough that it produces a fusion reaction. At first it just fuses hydrogen into helium. But then it runs out of hydrogen and starts fusing the helium into Carbon. At this stage it swells up big and becomes a red giant.
Then it runs out of that, and fuses the Carbon into Iron. At this point, the fusion reaction is consuming more energy than it produces. This implodes the star in an instant, the star will literally shrink as fast as acceleration will allow, and then blow up again. That's called a nova, or supernova for the big ones.
The logic that the entire core shifts instantaneously does not really seem to be based on first-reasoning, but rather an attempt to explain the supernovas we've witnessed in the sky.

Anyway, the small stars (97%) that nova will form a planetary nebula, and the remaining core will become a white dwarf. It's mostly carbon and oxygen, still burning hot. Eventually the fire goes out and it becomes black dwarf. This star would be incredibly dense, just pure carbon and oxygen.

The really huge stars have a core so large and massive, that when it collapses, it melts down the atoms inside itself and turns them all into neutrons. This star wouldn't have atoms, it would just be pure-neutron material packed as tight as possible. It would be ridiculously dense, so dense you cannot believe it. Because angular momentum is conserved, it would likely be spinning incredibly fast, like once per second. This could explain the pulsars we see in the sky.

If a star is even bigger, the thinking is that the gravity would be so immensely large that light could not escape. A so-called "black hole". A huge amount of theory has been fleshed out to describe and explain black holes. Although it's all just theory. In Astrophysics, getting something to within a power of 10 is considered "super accurate". It's important to emphasize how much guesswork there is. These guys like to overemphasize how much they know and put on holy robes, but really it's a lot of guesswork.
Anyway, one idea is that the center of a galaxy has so many large stars, because there's so much more material there. Those stars would mostly turn into black holes. Those black holes would start combining, and become a supermassive black hole. One idea is that the center of every galaxy is a massive superblack hole. In a sense, the entire galaxy is like a "drain" that is rotating around the black hole at the center.
That's just one line of thinking though. A scary one.
Keep in mind that all of these models have failed to accurately describe how galaxies rotate the way they do, so they invented all sorts of cockamamie ideas to explain it. Such as "dark matter", which is literally just "we don't know what's going on so we'll invent a bunch of mass that we can't see or measure but which makes our calculations work"

TLDR: The MIT team looked at the Mars One plan to have plants and humans and that it would be almost impossible to do without either creating an unsafe level of Oxygen that would burn the place down or not having enough PSI to be livable.
