I need to be more attractive than you, and you need to be more attractive than me. This isn't possible without creating a logical contradiction, and thus sex promotes never-ending competition that cannot be eliminated through technology. In fact technology actually intensifies sexual competition. This is because scarcity is what forces people to stop competing for sex and cooperate. Once you take away the scarcity you take away the basis for cooperation, and the only thing left to do is compete for sex (and other relative resources like status etc), and this leads to hypercompetitive societies.

Categorizing needs in this way highlights a very important property. When it comes to absolute needs, you don't intrinsically benefit from the suffering of others, but when it comes to relative needs you do. Lets say I'm starving and you are not. That sucks for me. Now lets say a swarm of locusts destroys all of your food. You are now worse off, but this doesn't magically make me better off. I'm still starving. Now lets say I'm 6/10 and you're 10/10. That sucks for me. Now lets say you are disfigured in an acid attack and are now a 2/10. You are now worse off and this does magically make me better of because I am being compared to you. When it comes to relative needs, you benefit from the suffering of others, and thus the unregulated pursuit of relative needs creates a never-ending drive to inflict suffering upon others. This is why human-inflicted suffering still exists in technological societies that have the means to solve everyone's absolute needs.
