If the colonel said to take that village, we had to just charge and take it regardless of casualties even though retreat wasn't punishable by death or prison at the time for the US. Think of D-day as well. It was literally just men walking in a straight line as artillery and machine guns killed them by the hundreds and quite literally nothing else was happening, but they still won.

The original plan for a quick war had basically the same problem Putin's had for 20 years on the Ukraine subject; he keeps assuming that there are rational actors to negotiate with on the other side. He presumed that he could just insert people into Kiev (which he did) and Kiev would broker a deal (which they did) that they would stick to because they would understand they couldn't possibly win the war when Russia is both larger than them and has a huge nuclear arsenal that ensures Russia cannot lose any war ever without everyone else losing too. Imagine his shock when he retreated and Zelensky just called off the deal and said he'd prefer to fight. Lunacy. But of course neither Zelensky nor his CIA handlers have Ukraine's interests at heart.

This current meat grinder situation is plan B; land doesn't fight, people do. The West can ship in infinity weapons and dollars but it can only help with small, clandestine amounts of troops; Ukraine can only fight with the troops it has that are Ukrainian, of which there are limited amounts. Kill all the soldiers, end the war, simple as. Russia also understands that the main point of the war is to weaken Russia, so taking many steps to avoid exhausting themselves and retaining troop counts for possible attack elsewhere also informs their strategy. So they play it safe, prioritize kills over territory acquisition, and aim for a long war.
