yeah i know about the other emirates. they have higher proportions of emiratis. abu dhabi is also like 5% emirati. sharjah maybe a bit higher at 20%. vast majority of the population lives in abu dhabi dubai and sharjah though. the country as a whole is 95% foreigners. Emirati neighborhoods look nice but people seem to care more about the insides of their compound than the outside environment.

I don't live in dubai. when I was a kid the country's demographics felt like 50% emriati. and the rest being south asian and arab. and then around the 00s we started a massive urban sprawl that included a lot of migrants (we call them expats because they are here temporarily). I remember it was around that time when I first started seeing more and more Filipinos. in my city 40 minutes away form Dubai. We had certain neighborhoods with a lot of east european/russian tenets in the buildings. we just called them all russians because they were new to us and we didn't know the difference between different east europeans. So they were all russian to us. then 2008 happened and a lot of migrants left. however when the economy recovered it felt like everyone from everywhere was coming over here. from africa, the uk, europe, asia, usa, etc... until we got to this point where we're like 10% of the country and the rest is foreign. but you're right in dubai we're probably significantly less than 10%.

but the vast majority don't really have any viable path to citizenship. they all know they are here temporarily. you'll have to invest 2 million AED / 550k USD to get citizenship. So really 98%+ of citizens are just the locals that were here before oil money like me (and my grandparents). The government doesn't want us (citizens) to be poor. So we're doing well.
