To an extent, but it was far easier to make a living as a 'small-time' writer in the past than today. In the 1950's, local journals and newspapers and magazines used to pay around $25 to $50 per published piece, depending on length and the popularity of the publication. Rent at a cheaper boarding house in that era was around 25 to 75 cents per day, and actual apartments started around $35 per month.

So it was a lot more viable to live in an urban area off of your writing alone. From what I can find, it was A LOT easier to 'get by' as a writer/artist/poet/etc. in the 1950's than it would be today. By a huge margin. Even a relatively unsuccessful writer could still get a piece or two published from time to time, and cover the monthly bills.

There's still opportunity. I worked in retail for years and was pretty sociable with my customers. Talked to one who worked as an arborist, told me I could make lots of money, told him alright, and I took a week off my job (had bunch of flex days saved up) to try working with him. This was before the fancy machines that they use now, I had to operate a manual swivel 700lb stump grinder, pull the trees down with a truck, cut, gather, load it all into a truck, then unload it all over again. Hardest work of my life, no training except what the guy told me to do. Great money, I was pulling in double of what I was making in retail, but I quit anyway because I didn't need THAT much money back then and retail I could talk to lots of hot girls instead, lel.

I was brought up to be hard working and very debt adverse by my older (Great Generation) parents. I started working full time at 14, but only 20 hrs a week when school was in session. I drove a shitty car in high-school and college and got my college paid for by going into the Navy. Despite having my first kid at 20, I could buy my first house in my 20s and had everything paid off by 50.
Now my income is close to my peak, all the kids are out of the house, and everything is paid for. Life is good.

Basically for rent signs everywhere, you just walked up to the guy, shook his hand and moved in the same day. No credit check, background check, deposit, paystubs or any of that shit.
