Socially, it was way better before smart phones. People today are very ill-adjusted socially.
It’s nice to be able to navigate to places and to call (no-longer-existent) friends when trying to meet up somewhere but everything else about smart phones has been bad for society.
I first started driving around the time you could print out directions from Mapquest at home and take them with you and even that was a god-sent gift compared to what you had to do before.
