I can be even more specific, the majority of executions were of male clerics that adopted heretical views and refused to repent and rejoin the Catholic Church, since that was the main goal of the Inquisition, the stomping out of heresy.

If someone wanted to escape the Inquisition they could simply prove they were a jew or muslim publicly and the Inquisition would release them. Of course that meant they would be expelled from the Kingdom in accordance with the Spanish Alhambra decree or the Portuguese Decree of Expulsion. If someone claimed to be a Catholic publicly but was a crypto-jew/muslim, then that person was an heretic and was subject to trial by the Inquisition.
