We have 6 ducks, 20 chickens, and 5 guinea hens the Guini's eat all the tickets and fly eggs in the area highly recommend to raise with chickens. If any have chick's I'd recommend getting them a heat lamp.

They are very noisy but I put up with em because we dont have mosquitoes in the summer which is a godsend in my book. We let ours free range but the Foxes and Yotes up here have taken a few from us over the years. We need a small dog with a large invisible fence around our property to secure our chickens.

Chicken wire in hardware is junk, find the stuff with smaller holes so snakes and weasels can't get in.
They need calcium in their diet for new shells. Used egg shells can be cleaned and baked before crushed up and added into their food.
Don't trust any brand feed know what they need to grow.
A few inches of wood chips and Diatomaceous earth can get rid of shit smell inside a coop.

Plant haygrazer in May and they will have all the protein they need. Wheat will sustain them in the winter but you won't get many eggs without extra protein.

i only pay $51 a year because i receive a homestead tax credit, they keep over 10 miles of county road maintained to my driveway for that so i am not complaining.

Raising a handful of chickens is not enough to sustain yourself without needing a supplementary income. You are competing with large factory farms.

Consider diversifying into things like herbs and heirloom crops, then you can actually make a living on a small patch of land. Chives are called the gateway crop for a reason.

Meh I've seen live chickens go for 6-12 bucks at local auctions all the time. No need to start packaging hundreds of chickens to compete with your local grocery store's factorio farm.

chickens are super easy and they handle cold well. my coop is 8ftx4ft and easy fits 7 chickens. i only put 2 nesting boxes but they only use one. you will need to make a run for them to go outside unless you are going to let them free range. the main thing is your coop must be secure from foxes, weasels, raccoons, big house cats ect. keep it simple, it should not take very much money to raise chickens once you make the investment in a coop. i made my coop out of 8 pallets 2 2x4's and some scraps of tin

My advice? Free range your chickens build your coop near the water source you have for them. Buy a heat lamp so your baby chickens will survive the winter.

You need roosters to make more little hens and also they are good at fighting off most land based varmints. My roosters gang killed a fucking big ass raccoon and a possum.

But Eagles, coyotes, Foxes remain an issue. My solution is a dog. I guess that depends on your situation I'm out in the sticks. For urban farming id suggest a different approach because is anyone dealing with coyotes or foxes in the burbs?

yes i know that. but if you get all your rooster culled because your neighbors (close, i assume) got POd by the noise, you just lose the roosters. if you want pest control to keep raccoons out (ive had those fuckers kill my chickens before so i just trapped them all a couple years ago and dont see them anymore) use an electric fence and toughen your coop. they tend to only come at night anyway.

I'm doing it! In the process of building my coop now. It's almost complete. Their run is enough for them right now and I have some night time shelter for them in there before I give them access to the coop.
Got a dozen eggs layers and a regular crop of 6-10 meat birds that I'll butcher every few months. With just these chickens and the gardening I'm already elbow deep in, I should gain independence from the grocery store by the end of the year. If I'm successful, good luck to any of you fucks seeing me out there in public. I'll never go back to the zoo again
