no one ever told me not to drink rain water but I grew up rural. I got told not to drink or swim in dams on peoples property and not to swim or drink down river from an abattoir. most people who collect rain water use it for their garden here. you can filter it and drink it if you want. some properties use bore water which they drink it just taste a bit strange. Australia is probably just a large enough land mass with less population concertation so it doesn't matter because not enough pollutants have made it into the environment yet

I live in a valley with centuries of heavy pollution that has nowhere to escape so it just all winds up in the river and rain water. Major chemical manufacturing goes on here and the factories will burn it or just dump it straight into the river which goes straight into the tap water which is used for drinking and making food. Big reason I stopped eating bread and pizza made locally is because it uses this poisoned water to make the dough.

That's by design though.
