Yes, in USA insurance requirements vary by state but in every one I know the mandate has no relation to your car price, the only required component is liability insurance (what you pay for damage or injury caused to someone else or their stuff). Your own vehicle is covered by comprehensive, this is separate and for incidents not only including accidents as above but also theft or other damage caused by anyone other than you. Comprehensive obviously is related to your car value very closely. States usually say you need $50,000 or so of liability, but make no comments about comprehensive because they don't give a shit about YOUR car that you damaged, they care about you going around damaging other people's stuff and not paying for it. I skip comprehensive on some vehicles because I don't plan on replacing them, but recently regretted that when a car got a lot of hail damage. Comprehensive is usually just a few dollars per month if your car is crap.
