They volunteer for that, and it’s considered an honor/privilege to participate. I’ve actually been to the Angola Prison Rodeo a few times. It’s very positive for the inmates. They get a chance to perform in front of an appreciative audience and get applause. For most, it’s probably the only time in their lives they get to bask in some public approval.

They aren’t in cells 23 hours a day. They are out working. The ones who do more of the ranching-type work usually do the rodeo. It’s a privilege; if they have disciplinary problems they can’t participate. If the bull hurts them, they go to the hospital same as any other rodeo.
