They aren't. You can get a cheap twin mattress for less than $100 or a japanese futon for around the same price which would be the better choice if you can't afford a bed frame since sleeping on a mattress directly on the floor can lead to mold forming in the mattress due to no air flow underneath. The futon is easier to air out since you just fold it up, carry it out somewhere with good airflow, and hang it up in order to prevent mold.
Any mattress is fine as long as it isn't so old and busted it has springs popping out. Even sleeping directly on the floor isn't too bad as long as you have a blanket

I bought a house in 2020 for 350 now valued at 650k. I didn't even renovate. Was looking at a house I rented to buy at the same time, it was 450k and now about 920k. I'm near positive it didn't get renovated. Houses have double in my area with no upgrades. Pretty sure people are buying them too as it's a great location. I also have a 3.9% interest rate....meaning people are buying what I bought for not only twice the cost but twice the interest. My mortgage payment isn't terrible but it's high, and utilities have also about doubled. I can't understand how this whole shitshow hasn't collapse yet.

If I were single I'd sell this shit today, make about 300k gross, and then rent some cheap spot or fund work with board and ride it all out.
