I've helped my wife with cleaning (she was badly sick), it's really not that bad compared to my work. You only have to do the more extensive cleaning like vacuuming and mopping on Saturday. The rest of the week it's light maintenance, ie, occasional sweeping, countertops and dishes.
Both the dishwasher and washer and dryer are modern marvels that allow her to discard big food bits, rinse and rack dishes in the dishwasher. Clothes are more complex because you have to iron them, but here's the breakdown.
daily dishes (scrape, rinse, dishwasher) - 30mins-1hr mins max
sweeping (also rhoomba helps) - 20 mins
meal prep - depends on # of kids, but say 1-2 hrs a day, 5-7 hrs on weekends for big food prep for week
clothes (washer/dryer), ironing and beds- 10-12 hours per week
kids- depends on age an # of kids, times very, as they get older and if there's more than 1, the micromanagement decreases because they become more autonomous and also play with one another
It is really not that tough of a job. I work 55-60 hrs usually in stressful admin position and do home repairs and renovation, fix our cars, yard work, landscaping, whatever in my 'free' home time.
Traditional stay at home mothers really do not have that tough of a job or life. We went insane with so-called women's rights. They arguably have less autonomy, more stress and misery now than ever before.
