The most recent but quite mild. Last week I interviewed 4 people for an onsite tech support technician. Someone who goes to customer sites in a small van, swaps faulty equipment, diagnoses simple problems. When not on site they help the engineers with development and deployment work, train and hopefully upskill so they can climb the ranks. No degree needed, the only mandated requirements were an interest in tech, a willingness to learn and a clean driving license. 3 simple requirements that they all claimed to have on their CV's

Come the day of the interviews it turns out 3 of the 4 dont even have driving licenses. Of the one that does, she doesnt think $24/hr is a fair starting rate for trainee and that I should make her a more "realistic" offer. Not only that, she really isnt that interested in our kind of tech but social media is tech so she would be happy to do our social media instead. One of the guys turned up wearing jeans a black tshirt with black lipstick and black nail varnish and told us straight out he was only interested in working on phones (which we dont do) and then only Android phones, iPhones are for boomers. He literally said that with no trace of irony. One of the other guys looked the part but basically gave single word answers and wouldnt look anyone in the eyes. Im used to that with employing a lot of autistic people but this was a bit different. When my HR woman finally got him to open up and tell us what the problem was he explained that he didnt want the job but his dad made him apply under threat of cutting him off financially. The final guy was actually ok and I agreed to put him through some driving lessons as part of his job offer so he could get past his learners permit

What's also funny is the job you're describing is basically my job. I'm field support rep for a tech company, and I gotta say it's a great job. I show up, dress well, act professional towards customers, know my shit and sometimes make a few sales almost by accident. My boss is a 50 year old Navy vet who basically just says as long as I do my job and respond to support tickets, he doesn't give a fuck what I do. It's a really simple job honestly, the only tough stuff is its a niche tech field, but I happen to have a background in it.

I don't have a story as interesting as yours but I knew so many guys that would settle into a specific role when I worked at a warehouse and they would do fuck all except the task they assigned themselves. Like, the jobs were shipping orders, loading trucks, receiving skids and boxes, doing transfers, stocking, reorganising the pipe racks (This was a plumbing retailer btw), but guys would pick one of those jobs and avoid all the other work and get pissy when they had to do other shit.

I took an American Federal Government class in college some years back
We unironically watched a Michael Moore film on that one shooting where him and the kid as for a refund or something on the bullet

No one in that class left knowing why certain departments were formed, there was no historical context given or in depth lectures on why unicameral vs bicameral, or why a Senate exists in a representative democracy when it doesn't directly represent the will of the entire populace.

Even in middle school and high school I had history teachers that tried to offer historical contexts and rationalize both sides of a coin.

When I was in school more than a decade ago US history largely stopped at 1900 unless you were in the honors course which went up to WW2, or AP which went up to the end of Vietnam (1975).
