I always make a point to go into any book shop I find. Second hand bookshops especially. Wales is full of them, for example.
The issue is that second hand bookshops with anything worth buying crank the prices up to absurd levels. Because they also sell online.
So the days of the cheap book for a quid is gone. You want a 3rd volume in a series with serious water-damge to the cover? 10 quid please.

There are some exceptions. One Welsh town has a bookshop over the road from the city hall that works on an honour system. Empty shop, you take your book and put the money into a box and leave. Completely unattended. It's actually spread across two shopfronts, so you have to leave the shop and walk next door to either pay or see the other half of the stock. That one was great. But they had a fairly poor selection. IIRC I bought an Arthur C Clarke hardback collection of four stories for a couple of quid, and a three pack of the first three Dragonriders of Pern for a fiver. More to support the owner than out of any real desire to re-read the books. But that is a rare beast these days.

Sadly Ebay is where I buy most of my books these days. It aint cheap either, but at least you can get what you want.

I was a pretty voracious reader when young. Read all kinds of books and mags for years. But then the internet came along. You see, this is the point of it all. Men read for knowledge, Women read for entertainment. I spend hours on the internet and have for decades now, researching, reading, cross referencing etc al. The real answer is that its more profitable to market books towards women because its easier to get them to buy things they don't need. Men would be more likely to go to a used bookstore to save money, or download a PDF/epub of whatever book they want. For women you market things towards them and they just buy it. I'm a man. When I was a kid, I read a lot - some pulp, some trendy fiction (best sellers, Steven King, etc), kids novels and series, and a lot of the typical American literature of the time. I really enjoyed reading.

I earned a BA in English, which was heavy on classics of the western canon. I then earned a MA in English during the 1990s, which is where I saw a turn in what was being pushed - s0 called minority grievance literature. I finished earning my MA and left the field.

My job for the past 25 years has nothing to do with literature or reading, and I rarely read for pleasure, despite loving it as a kid and young man. Most of the fiction today is awful feminist, minority crap. They seem to not even publish men anyore, other than saome Dean Koontz style best seller shit. Which is not literature, even if it is good story telling. There is some creativity out there but very little male made artistry.
