America has been building advanced chip plants for half a decade, it's actually the only industry we got a head start on reshoring. Our goal should be expanding and modernizing our power infrastructure because the vast majority of what we need to rebuild and reactivate is stuff like refining rare earths and smelting iron, using methods developed a century ago this can be brought online in a year or two and very cheaply compared to the high end stuff. Rebuilding America's steel industry takes the headache out of literally all future heavy machinery manufacturing, which is the part that might take 5+ years. But we could absolutely be building an iPhone in America out of entirely American parts in five years or less, no sweat. Since China is going extinct and will collapse by the end of the next decade, we will have to do this eventually regardless of tariffs and trade wars, Trump is just getting us ahead of the curve. The increased Chinese demand has been erased as a factor because Vietnam American trade is so huge. What I assume US wants is an end to Vietnamese transshipment of Chinese goods especially in Haiphong.

China has most of the same problems we do but in 10x speed, they look impressive right now but there's not a lot actually backing that up
