Apple stole display tech from their suppliers in Japan and S. Korea and have them to BOE in China to further slash the cost of display. They're completely dependent on BOE now except for the iPhone Pro Max, for which they still use Samsung. China is not going to let BOE build a display plant in the U.S. If Apple opts to remove BOE parts and use Samsung or JDI display panels for all their products, the price will surge as all electronics makers fight for display panels produced in less tarriffed countries. It takes 5 years to build a new display plant and get it running, so it's going to be a while before an American plant comes online if that ever happens.

What’s good for nation building is off setting costs by moving low skilled jobs like manufacturing overseas so you can invest in high skilled jobs domestically. Moving manufacturing back here would mean that prices have to either be raised or costs cut, and cutting costs always starts with letting staff go. You’re essentially trading high skilled labor for low skilled labor for no reason

This is often a delay tactic. Apple could easily shift SOME PERCENTAGE of iPhone production to the United States very quickly. iPhones are very simple devices (go watch an iPhone teardown video), there are plenty of Electronic Manufacturing Services providers with unused production capacity in the United States. At the end of the day iPhones are just circuit boards that go through the SMT process, have some additional components soldered on, get programmed/tested and then put into plastic housings; this is not some byzantine technology that only exists in China its stuff that gets done all across America every single day. I know because I have worked in the industry for a decade.
