In the 40s and 60s there were plenty of white dancers, taken as inspirations by MJ instead: Fred Astaire, Bob Fosse, Gene Kelly, Baryshnikov, West Side Story (inspired Bad) and many more that developed a signature genre. Jackson admired Astaire's ethereal lightness, control, and grace. Astaire, in turn, praised Jackson and once told him, 'You’re a hell of a mover. Man, you really put them on their asses.' His suave silhouette and fluidity directly inspired Jackson’s smooth footwork and poise, as Jackson took much inspiration from signature moves and even their dress. A lot of his dance routines and videos referenced old hollywood musicals or art pieces. Then there are black dancers such as James Brown.
