Most of it is incinerated, most of the trash that can't be incinerated (spent fuel or replaced steam generators) are stored on site. Regardless most contamination comes from activated iron or cobalt which has a half life of 70ish days to 5 years.

Eh improvements were made up the levels of redundancy today are insane any new plant has at least two of every system generally three to four. Your Reactor Coolant Pump goes down? You have another. Both somehow go down? The system is designed to be self-circulating. Not circulating enough and heat/pressure builds up? Release valves automatically relieve pressure, probably four or more each of which can individually relieve pressure fast enough to prevent a rupture. Still getting too hot? You have two massive tanks to pump borated water into the core to reduce reactivity and cool the fuel. Still not enough? Watwr already dumped into core is recycled and sprayed onto the core again.

The nuclear industry is the most regulated industry on earth. In order to become a basic bitch equipment operator "find this valve and close it" you need to pass the EEI POSS test which is essentially an IQ test, then you need to get hired (you take the test before anyone even interviews you), then you need to pass their initial training which takes probably 2-3 months, then you need to pass their systems training which is probably 2-6 months depending on utility at any point you can flunk out. After that you are at the bottom rung of operators and everyone will watch what you do and criticize you constantly in a formal setting with punishments for genuine fuck ups ranging from improvement plans to losing qualifications and undergoing retraining to firing to having federal charges pressed. Then if you do that for two years you can apply to be a reactor operator, the people in the actual control room. After two years as a reactor operator you can apply to be a supervisor reactor operator which includes more tests and 18 months straight of classes.

This is ignoring that plants go through site wide drills of accidents about every six months and operators go through drills of accidents every month or so. If you've ever been in the simulator during a drill you could tell that it's a job a nigger would never be able to get into.

One thing I literally never seen discussed by anyone regarding nuclear power plants is this scenario. What if a couple nukes explode in the upper atmosphere, releasing EMP blasts that wreck electronic systems, including the electronic systems that control the pumps replacing the water used in the cooling system. Wouldn't that result in core meltdowns of every nuclear facility within the affected area? Probably just a drop in the bucket in a MAD scenario, but couldn't a relatively small nuclear actor (North Korea or Israel) take advantage of this security oversight?

One thing I literally never seen discussed by anyone regarding nuclear power plants is this scenario. What if a couple nukes explode in the upper atmosphere, releasing EMP blasts that wreck electronic systems, including the electronic systems that control the pumps replacing the water used in the cooling system.

No. Emergency core cooling in plants even from the 70s and 80s is automatic. Reactor coolant can cycle at reduced efficiency even with pumps down and if pressure increases release valves will relieve pressures in the coolant system while valve to add coolant to the core can be manually operated and/or will be automatically operated via a loss of pressure. Also I doubt an EMP can effect anything through 4-6 feet of concrete plus about half an inch of steel just from the containment.

So even if the turbines go down you can just cool the core, the steam generators will heat the secondary side and relief valves will relieve pressure and heat on the secondary side while water from the secondary side is drawn from the lake and is wholly uncontaminated throughout the process. Granted that's only for PWRs, I imagine CANDUs have similar measures and boilers I'm largely ignorant of although the steam going through their turbines is contaminated you still wouldn't get a meltdown and any release would be shorter lived contamination.

Not exactly, because the nuclear material ungoes changes during fission. The end products are different than what went in. Some isotopes, like Polonium 210, are much more toxic compared to Uranium 238, U235 and U234 that would be found in nature. Not against Nuclear though. The amount of waste is basically irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

My overall point on the job process from application to SRO was mostly to illustrate how nuclear is different. It isn't like getting hired as an engineer at Volkswagen where you go through six stupid fucking interviews where they ask you shit like "if you could be any animal what animal would you be?" go through a week of orientation, and get put to work where you could knock out an entire factory with one wrong button push. Only HR I dealt with since applying was scheduling my interview and getting my acceptance letter. HR wasn't even at my interview, just two managers in my department and my future supervisor.

Nuclear industry has been continually advancing. Thorium is a meme and I think SMRs are misguided but even ignoring those nuclear plant designs are increasingly efficient and safe and even in older plants features from newer plants are regularly added to increase efficiency. My plant actually had enough modifications over a decade ago to increase power output by about 15% which is pretty solid for a plant that's existed for over half a century.

It's simply not actually being developed and even when developed you will need to build plants which will ultimately have similar requirements for build requirements due to a (mitigated) threat of release. Thorium still creates activation products so you'd still get radioactive isotopes of cobalt and iron which creates most of the dose and waste in a nuclear plant.

Thorium is one of those technologies that's always 20 years away and resources dedicated to developing it should largely instead be dedicated to building more nuke plants since in the west we build essentially no nuke plants with the US building 3 reactors over the last 25 years.

Tech, kinda, the designs are wholly new, and if they were simply refurbish military reactors I wouldn't mind much, but with nuclear the issue isn't tech. The issues with nuclear are twofold, manpower in development and manpower in operation. Put simply you need a lot of people to build a nuclear plant and a lot of people to operate a nuclear plant. SMRs somewhat mitigate the former but massively increase the latter. At all times the skeleton crew of a single commercial nuclear reactor is about 20 personnel between equipment operators, reactor operators, SROs, shift managers, rad techs, and chemists, this is regardless of your reactor size for the most part (you might need more equipment operators and an additional radtech for larger plants) and these are some of the most stressed and trained people in a plant short of engineers (SROs and shift managers are more trained than engineers and often engineers by training or career). Thus if you have say five SMRs to achieve the same power output as a single larger reactor you'll have about five times the highly experienced, highly niche personnel. For an industry that's already massively understaffed increasing its staffing requirements massively is fucking retarded.

Before Chernobyl, the general consensus was that a runaway nuclear reactor was basically impossible. That's because of how a reactor is designed. There are different kinds of reactors, but they work on the same principles. They increase and decrease the speed of the reactions through neutron moderators and absorbers. It's kinda counter intuitive, but the moderator (heavy water, light water, graphite) slows down the neutrons increasing it's likelihood of spliting fissile material, causing a nuclear reaction, while an absorber absorbs neutrons, preventing them from reacting.

So most nuclear reactors by default have a negative feedback state, meaning as it runs, it slowly dies out and it has to be countered by introducing a moderator in order to keep it going. Xenon, which is produced as a byproduct of fission, acts as an absorber so a nuclear reaction would eventually end after a certain period of time as the xenon would increase and kill the reaction. There is also the fact that with the water reactors, where the water acts as a moderator, as heat increases from reactions the water would boil therefore it would decrease the moderators presence, again a negative feedback loop. There are more absorbers present but you get the idea.

The irony of Chernobyl is that it was technically caused by entering a low output state from too much xenon, so the engineers tried to get it back up and running again by introducing a shit load of moderators at once, in this case they used ALL of the graphite rods at the same time. Then because of how the RBMK reactor was designed, it had some side effects that led to the explosion.

Nuclear reactors are generally quite safe and the few issues that have appeared are very much outliers. People think they're going to turn into fission bombs, but because the amount of fissile material present is vastly different, it's almost impossible for a reactor to do that.
