The axis alliance was explicitly to take on the British empire.
WW2 1939-1941 was axis vs British empire.
WW2 1941-1945 was Germany and Japan vs Soviet Union and USA.
(USA was dominant in the pacific theatre defeating the Japanese).
This is all ignoring the Japanese war in China.
