That's a nice income for 2013. I only make $220k in 2025. My wife pulls $160K. We can't afford to buy a condo in a white coastal part of LA (would be about $9K a month or more in mortgage/HOA/interest/property tax) without taking from our maxed-out 401k savings. We're not doing that.
So instead we rent a top-floor oceanview apartment for $4500 a month and have a 35 foot sailboat while stacking as much as we can into savings.
Even if we bought a place, we'd be throwing at least $4500 away into mortgage interest for the first fifteen years anyway. So why not rent since we don't intend to stay in LA and don't think the market can continue current trends long-term.
