I've been playing RPGs since I was a kid and loved the intelligent worldbuilding, wild plotlines, and genuine sense of adventure I would get from them.

Modern RPGs require insane cognitive dissonance, mashing every race and culture together in every city of every region and ensuring that there's no nuance given to the worldbuilding or philosophical/cultural perspectives. Every title I've seen over the past five years looks like California: Fantasy Edition, and the characters are all the writer's self-inserts so much so that dramatic monologuing is inevitable and it's about a topic completely irrelevant to the in-game world and deeply tied to modern politics, particularly social issues.

They have effectively stripped my favourite genre of it's primary quality, no longer are RPGs an escape into an alien world where you're free to be anyone, they're now an extension of Californian thinking. They reek of little fat girl with a useless college degree.

A variety of reasons. Modern games being trash story and gameplay wise. Modern rpg games being on rails but with a grind. You knew you were in the wrong area because mobs one shot you before. Now to pad average play time data for investors it created games where you have to grind for exp or items. Not the type of old school ff type grind but designed to take more time type grind. I am so exhausted by it. Just a single example is 2005 star wars battlefront 2 to modern battlefront 2. The online of 2005 was connect to internet and queue for any map. Randomly get the hero character. Join any server. Could join standard maps, jedi only maps, flying only maps and just play with preset classes and could play all day and not get bored. Modern is dlc for maps, grinds for attachments and weapons, grind for unlocking hero characters, etc. I think it was lootboxes then updated to in game challenges for unlocks. Where 20 years ago again it was just plug up and go.
That entire design philosophy makes games either a grind for player statistic retension or pay to advance to rewards quicker. From roblox to Dota type games it is all the same now. I crave a game I can just download and disconnect from the internet and just have fun. I used to be able to count on Bethesda games for that but Starfield has the same issue with barren randomly generated planets to waste your time. The last good game I played which avoided this was Witcher 3 but it had its flaws too. Generally was good though. I haven't pirated oblivion remaster but maybe they fixed some of the shitty combat in that game since that was my main issue on the original. That and horse armor dlc.

Older games just have so many advantages and so few downsides besides graphics, and investment in graphics has extreme diminishing returns. Less time passed between Goldeneye 64 and Crysis than between GTA5 and the present day. Graphics matter less and less as time goes on, but graphics take up more and more of a game's budget (both financial and performance) as time goes on.

I tried that, it sucked balls. Quests are not per player, once one player does a quest it's done for all players, and no other player can do it again, yet other things like reputation is not shared, rewards are not shared, etc.

In the past the popular monetization strategy was just to make a good game that lots of people wanted to buy. Now the popular monetization strategies incentivize making bad games, then promising to make the games good via DLC etc.

Because it's a question of art direction and coding talent now, and that talent level in the industry on average is actually going down, not up. Even then, almost all new games with "good" visuals are either relying on UE5 gimmicks (at the price of terrible performance) or on the coding prowess of older engines that white guys made (Frostbite, for example. Arc Raiders looks pretty good visually, though; they have some spark of the old talent pool, even if the genre is pretty gay.

I haven't played fps in over 10 years but it is just for play time. Cod4 started it with that series at least but I'm not sure what game is to blame. Level to max and reset to wow friends then others are wowed and want to get the same special symbol taking a game where you might see all the maps in a few days to something you grind for months. All while being casual enough that a 200 hour player could play with their friend that just started.

Modern "realistic" graphics have also ruined a lot of the charm. Most worlds and environments look the same. Most character design now is shitty. Modern games also seem to just be doing things already way played out.
Older games tend to be pretty short comparatively, and it seems like they took more risks both experimentally with mechanics, and with their characters.
There is more soul in older games, which the corpos behind the modern games don't possess - thus it does not bleed into their ganes.

New total war games are FUCKING AWFUL. I heard Attila was alright. CA killed its own franchise when they attacked modibility starting with Empire TW. I remember that game being absolutely ruined by the modding locks.

The last "new" thing I enjoyed was the Silent Hill 2 remake. It's the same problem as the movie industry; everything's samey, preachy, with hyper-inflated budgets. The only thing this year I'm looking forward to at this point is Doom Dark Ages, but even that I'm not exactly bouncing off the walls looking forward to.

I did get the Rome Remastered and it's good. I play Rome (original, barbarian, and alexander) and rarely Empires. Other than it it's some Fire Emblem randomly a few times a year lol. And when I play them I do a campaign over months, not just quick games here and there.
I'd just rather be outside than playing vidya nowadays. Fishing and woodowkring is a better hobby.

That's why performance is going down along with overall graphics quality. They are trying to use the GPU to do things other than render graphics. You're right, most people can't afford a $900 GPU, so this shit has to work on cheap hardware and consoles, so the trade off is shit graphics.

Originally the idea was to have games rendered off site (like Amazon's services) then streamed to the user but they realized they could just lower graphics quality and get the user's hardware to do it for them, so now this is the way.

That's also why some random indie dev can make a UE5 game with hyper real graphics with a very respectable frame rate with all the bells and whistles like nanite meshes and full raytracing (you can even precompute raytracing scenes) while some alleged "Triple A" behemoth dev who invested nearly a billion dollars just plops some shitty blender model at us and wins 20 million in revenue. Unless all the players are regional with ~20ms ping difference, somebody is going to get shit on in that match, there's really no way around it. There are things you can do to help but most of it involves predicting player movements (though on a small enough time resolution this is actually very easy) which by default immediately erodes competition, and whatever's left is at the mercy of the the server.

Combine this is a low player count and multiplayer experiences become almost unplayable, especially if the player is very high skilled and already struggles to find competitive matches to begin with. This is why competitive shooters are bad unless they can appeal to the largest player base possible (hence they are all free) to try and avoid this issue.

Activision/Blizzard has buckets full of patents describing ways to manipulate player experiences, as well as harvesting in game data from players in order to train bots which they describe as "indistinguishable" from humans, though calling out these bots as bots greatly diminishes their value and they companies will stop bot stuffing once it becomes common knowledge to the player base.

Take the nostalgia goggles off, and examine it for what it is, not what your child brain experienced and imagined it to be.
The quests are, for the most part, objectively shit. The stories are shit. The characters don't exist. The combat is. The magic system is bad, and very easy to break. Exploration is largely pointless.
The best/only way to play it is as a storyless dungeon-crawler, but even then the skills, dungeons, etc. range from shit to somewhat serviceable.
(The Shivering Isles is an exception. That's pretty good. Not great, but pretty good.)
