I live in the south now but grew up in Southern California, the other day I was curious to rent prices and the average rent in so cal is $2300 for a 600 square foot apartment.

Nah you get hassled so much these days. Used to be you could park overnight in any walmart and they were cool with it, now they hassle you (because it's no longer 24 hours that's part of why they got rid of being open all the time).

Now you have to be friends with the guy in charge of the parking lot or local cops, and even then it's really hard. The smart people camp out on federal lands moving around every week or so, but it's a huge pain compared to just getting an apartment.

There have been many bad stories of hosts who have taken in such people only for them to quit volunteering as soon as they've legally established residency on the property...or else do such a bad job at what they do that the host quits asking them to do anything.

Learn to read between the lines on this listing. The organizer is going to get a private room, but you can bet your ass he'll be working 40 hours a week. The regular volunteers will work their allotted hours, but will be served cheap slop and given tents with airbeds to sleep in. Again, it's something fun for a youngster who wants to experience farm life for a week, but sleeping in a minivan or SUV and cooking your own meals on a campstove makes a whole lot more sense if you have any desire to stack cash.

Even though I worked a full time job and had a gym membership, just spending the rest of the time in the car is fuckin' BORING. I would if I could afford a car. I live in mt sister's spare bedroom, and the landlord sold the property her trailer is on, so we are moving in with her friend at the beginning of next month. I used to either ride a bike 5 hours a day or walk 10 hours a day if it were broken (which happened often) in order to get to work. Can't live in town because of the blacks. I've lived on the street a few times in my life and kept getting off the street just to end up back on them. Mechanics get like $25/hr or some other shit wage and their only hope is beating "flat rate" times which almost never happens because there's always some problem that comes up like bolts breaking off, etc. Working on cars just isn't that streamlined. So in reality mechanics often make much less than that. It's a very shitty career choice

Spent some time in the Florida Keys in March, which is boat Mecca for a lot of people.

Cheapest way to live is to have your boat tied off to a buoy in the harbor for around $300/month. That's with no power hookups, no fresh water, no sewer. People have solar panels to keep electronics running and batteries charged but you can run an AC without a generator running and all of your fresh water and supplies are brought from land on your dinghy. It's one step up from homelessness and a lot of boats just get abandoned and sunk when the storms come in.

Staying at a dock slip is much more expensive but gives you all of the amenities of a nice RV park.

My parents have been traveling around the east coast on a nice 44ft trauler over that last 5 summers but that's larger and more expensive than what most boat life people are looking for. It's big and slow but has all the amenities of a large RV and can travel 1000 miles before needing to refuel. At the same time it's more mechanically complicated than an RV since it has 3 engines, huge filtration and cooling systems, navigation and communication equipment, large battery banks and storage space for weeks of supplies when in rural areas.
