I'm not against the concept of generational ships but they'd have to be build to the size and extent that they would essentially be mobile Earths, just as good if not better to live on than the real thing. They would not exactly go around "colonizing" planets, the vast majority of stars and worlds in this galaxy are likely uninhabitable (scratch out just about any red dwarf system for instance), rather they'd just strip materials and build copies of themselves, and tow planetoids/asteroids and other resources around to sustain these worldships.
