If we're going to go down the road of "why should I pay for someone not working" then employees shouldn't be required to show up at an office and be there for some pre-defined amount of time. Salary wouldn't exist and you'd pay each person a fixed price based on estimate of the work for a project.

Issue is that technology and market forces have optimized people out of labor. Just like a few combines have replaced all the farmhands previously necessary, computers (and now AI) are replacing our clerks and now our service workers. Labor is reaching post-scarcity, whereas the people who make up society are still dependent upon scarce resources.
The question then becomes, If we no longer need as many people to work, how will they earn enough to live? We will either see a turning from the managerial state into something entirely different, or there will be a mass die-off, similar to the Black Death which also acted as a sort of reset for the medieval economies before.

Likewise, workers should be free to take unpaid time off as they desire, returning to work at any point in the future.

PTO is not law in most states. Only medical emergencies and sick leave is in some. Companies aren’t required to give PTO but if you want good employees they do. Goes for any befit really.
