They merged their own Communist Correspondence Commitee with people who were previously followers of Wilhelm Weitling who had tried to overthrow the government of France as followers of Blanqui in 1839.

Marx and Engels were actually less radical than the rank and file though so there was an amusing incident where some dude challenged Marx to a duel by calling him too conservative but Marx declined.
