The “cult of positivity” infects some businesses. I had a boss who was obsessed with Tony Robbins who would make the company gather weekly to listen to him talk about the most hilariously self indulgent bullshit. There was a huge purge of employees about a year before I started, and many of them were suing him. Watching other employees slowly realize that this guy wanted to be a quasi-cult leader was really entertaining and justified my own beliefs that this guy was full of shit. There was one employee that remained from the previous purge that would tell me how our boss helped him to “understand anything was possible” during a fire walking ritual, because his feet didn’t burn. Charlatans use shit like this to convince midwits of magic because they don’t understand that the physics of it makes fire walking not burn your feet. He actually drove one employee to attempt suicide and after that lots of employees started to rebel, not showing up to his speeches, and citing our contracts which explicitly stated that we would not be required to attend any meetings, or work any specific hours, since we were all independent contractors. At the end the guy tried to steal money from every employee, I had figured something like this was coming so had set myself up good to not get screwed, but other employees did get robbed by him, and are now suing him like his last batch. And yes, he was.

Lots of small businesses. I used to work for one where it was a cult around the CEO. The guy was straight mentally ill. But he thought he was God and all the people in "management" would bow and do mental gymnastics to justify his every delusion.

Just to give an idea of how it was, in my 1 year there.
- The CEO created a social media app that is $8m in debt. Around $50k lifetime revenue after 7 years, and raised $6.5m off WeFunder from retail investors.
- They take regular trips to Hawaii and post it on the compamy social app
- CEO brought suspiciously young girls into the office. He had suggestive communications with those girls and many of the sorority girls they'd use to market the app. One was registered living at his address. Not related.
They also ran a computer repair business, in that:
- Had an Alzheiners patient regularly call in forgetting he had service. They kept scheduling the service and charging him $250 every two weeks or so. A technician spoke up about it and told it wasn't his place
- They pirated Win 7 licenses and rolled them to windows 10 and sold the license

I haven't worked for them in over 6 years, and have received death threats from them 3 times since. The last one being 3 months ago.

He paid his "debt peasants" $60k tops. And he'd pay hourly with no benefits, make whacky ass commission schemes and in multiple occasions ask them to work off the clock and bring personal items for company purposes (like tools for inflating or changing tires on company cars).
So yeah fuck that. On top of the threats and verbal abuse that's a fucked up environment.
I'm paid double that now and I've told off my current CEO before. Much less intense because I ACTUALLY like my CEO and he isn't malicious, but he's occasionally misguided. I think he actually respects I'm not a yes man. No other way Ive survived 7 years here.
