The difference between traveling 65mph vs 45mph over a 30 miles trip is about 10 minutes. 30 minutes vs 40 minutes. Here is the rub, because you're never able to constantly do the speed limit the difference is actually less.
It doesn't make any sense to speed from a practical standpoint and the only real way to save yourself from being late is to leave earlier.

I've definitely driven crazy when my mom lived 1100 miles away from dad back in the day because I was able to shave off an hour or so but in the end that was not really worth it. I ended up, as you mentioned, using a fuckload more fuel and wear and tear on my car as well as risking costly tickets, which I ended up getting one 85 in 55 ticket on the PA turnpike. $350 bucks. Last time I made that drive I just did 5 over and chilled in the right lane. Didn't stress out. Stopped a few times to get some stretching in. There is no excuse for anyone in a sub 25 year old passenger car or suv to not be up to merging speed by the end of the ramp. Just put your fucking foot down, engines need to be loaded from time to time. Fully packed trucks are a different story but they get a pass, and truthfully they rarely cause problems because they're mostly responsible enough to just get on the highway at a flatter or longer ramp entrance a mile or two down the road.

The light was green for me as I started to make the turn I saw a car coming at like 120 MPH which ran the red light and almost certainly would have killed me if I didn't look far to the right.
