The reason is because Medicare/caid will only pay for whatever the lowest price charged to anyone else for a procedure. they pay so little that it doesn’t even cover the costs from the hospital for the procedures done

To offset this the hospitals jack up the price. Officially that’s the price so the gov can’t complain when that’s Medicaid/cares bill. They won’t pay in full anyway. When someone without insurance goes to negotiate they can give a discount but they can’t just discount it without you asking. They are also trying to pile on expenses to insurance companies by jacking up the prices on things because the government underpays and like 65% of hospital bills are never paid anyway. Insurance companies will call and get their stuff discounted but this is the hospitals starting high to negotiate down for the best deal

If a procedure costs $50 to do the hospital would normally charge say $75 to do it with $25 profit if things were normal. The government only pays $25 if you tell them $50. So now you have to charge the insured guy $75 to just break even on the two procedures. Insurance will negotiate it down so now you have to charge $100 so they can negotiate it down to $75 so you can break even. Uninsured guy gets the same procedure and he’s charged $100. On paper the cost of the procedure went up 100%. With zero profit the procedure is $50 but because they have to offset alll that other bullshit they send you a bill for $100 that they instantly drop to $50 when you ask. Take this to a larger scale and that’s the problem with healthcare costs. No one wants to talk about it because fixing it hurts both sides
