This is true in my experiences. I've asked the women around me if they are in favor of this shit and the ones I've felt comfortable enough asking have said "yes, they support it." What they don't consider is that there are many women that they gatekeep from ever joining or trying the sport to begin with, as I mentioned in this post, , because the women that are not okay with it are essentially filtered out and turned away. If you were a women in gender non conforming tournaments that asked not to have to fence men, you would be disqualified and labelled a bit. And again, there are not any women's tournaments in my region either, which is pretty offensive to begin with.

Though, I am quite certain not all women are in support of it, because as I've tried to drive home, anyone involved with the sport that doesn't like this shit has to keep it close to their chest and be hush hush about it, because if you tell the wrong person you'll never be allowed to compete again and your club will probably kick you out. It's depressing to me that I know women who would otherwise like to join, but do not, specifically because of these issues. They also give the sport tons of bad press, such as this thread. They make us lose out on sponsorships and money, and cause the entire sport to be taken less seriously as a result. Some people just cannot help themselves, they have to show up to what is essentially a martial arts tournament with their gear and outfit adorned with accessories to let you know about their sexual interests.

I've seen very few people come from the LARP world to be honest, but of course there is some overlap. I could only definitively name two people off the top of my head that I know that larp. D&D is very popular though. But I guess in the age of Baldurs Gate 3 and such, that hobby is normie tier now.

I obviously don't have any data or polling or numbers to back this up. But if I was to throw a shot in the dark, I would say the community is probably 35% gay or bisexual, and probably around 5-10% trannies or sexually confused individuals. If you got 20 hema practitioners in a room together, you would probably have two trans people and one they/them.

I'm in chinese martial arts, in the last 20 years saw a lot of lesbians taking it up and then in the last 10 years trannies started getting into it. When I started training, it was mostly conservative Chinese people and the odd westerner. If I ever am at a seminar I just avoid them. I've seen old chinese teachers ignore and avoid them as well. Chinese martial arts are similar to HEMA probably in that you can define your contact level between you and your training partners, that's what opens it up for the trannies and gays.

If you try to have woman-only tournament brackets you'll have to have gender politics discussions to keep the troons in the men's or open bracket. If you don't have woman-only brackets it's going to be harder to retain women which is bad for these kinds of hobbies because men are more likely to stick with them long term (decades and generations) if they can be family bonding activities instead of taking time away from family bonding activities.

If you're looking for fencing and not to make friends with fencers you can usually check out of any non-fencing conversations and try to push conversation towards theory or starting the next bout. Just like with SCA some cliques will be more fat and social and some will be more athletic and serious so if you have multiple gyms in your area it's worth looking into all of them.

Because 99% of them are nerds and nerds are behind the bioleninism that has taken over leftism since 2012
