My wife is a bit of psycho, but she has empathy for me (a man hit by the ugly-stick a few times as a kid) and her closest family. No empathy for anyone else and she'll get pissed at me if I ever consider anyone else's feelings.

Apes would fight off predators together, and sometimes one would legitimately sacrifice themselves so the group would survive.

This was the foundation for what later became our sense of empathy once we grew into the age of agriculture. Tribes capable of empathizing with non-human pain survived better. If your livestock is sick and suffering, the ones who could key in onto that first were the ones to survive.

Now empathy is even more important as every human is an incredibly complex being in terms of layered issues. Those capable of recognizing these layers via emotional intelligence usually help diffuse problems before they become not only violent but dangerous. Emotional empathy also helps improve your social ring where (lets just face it) that improves survivability.

What you are describing is par for psychopathy, individuals who not only lack empathy but lack emotional sensation entirely. These individuals usually turn out violent or exploitative because they are incapable of seeing humans as anything other than resources.
