The cars don't just inexplicably stop working because it gets cold out, they run heaters to maintain battery temperature and that reduces the range by some 15-20%, but these temperatures also reduce the range of gasoline cars ~15% too, which most people don't even know or realize - which goes a long way to showing how little it actually matters to anyone.

it's a combination of MANY things. I suspect in Minnesota it's a matter of corrosion damage as well. The melting and refreezing cycles messes up A LOT of things. I'd be willing to bet corrosion from humidity and salty roads ruins more EVs than anything.

For 5 years that would cost $18,000. Whereas to buy a car and drive it for 5 years putting 10k miles each year, you'd lose $4,000 in resale value. Using the gold standard Prius hybrid and KBB to source this, so that's leasing just a POS Prius at $300 a month. Tesla from what I can find are $400 or more.

Under normal driving circumstances yes you lose some range due to the battery using electricity to heat itself but it's not the end of the world. What I think is causing confusion is what happens when an EV is left parked unplugged in the cold for a couple weeks or more which leads to the videos we've all seen of completely bricked EVs that are so dead they can't even be unlocked. This is not good for something like a work truck but OTOH people that drive to work M-F would never have a problem.

Partly the same reason it affects electrics - denser cold air to drive through and passengers running heaters, but the ICE also needs to run at certain temperatures to efficiently burn fuel (which takes longer to reach at negative fuck you) and denser air means more fuel added to the combustion chamber (to maintain the proper mixing ratio) as well

The colder an engine the more poorly fuel atomizes when injected and the more of it you need to not burn lean. At extremely low ambient temps if you don't have a system to block or bypass your radiator your car's engine temp will constantly fluctuate between the temp your thermostat opens up and quite a bit below. This temperature is unsuitable for proper atomization so you'll be getting the kind of fuel efficiency all cars get in their warmup tune, which can be as much as 40% higher than at temp consumption, but with most modern cars is less than 20% higher than spec. Auto engines really want to run at around 100c, the further away you stray from that in both directions the less efficient it's going to run and the more unhappy it's going to be.

European cars are pretty garbage today as well. Leak oil all over and made with a greater % of more plastic than your average only fans hooker.

True they're an expiring product but what people always leave out is that battery degradation (and this is also true for solar panels) follows a sort of logistics curve - initially the degradation is fast, and then it slows down to almost nothing.

What that means is they degrade to about 80% of their day 1 charge within a decade, but then it takes significantly longer for them to degrade any further past that. If it takes 3 years for a 10% drop in capacity, then the next 10% drop could take 6-8 years.

When people talk about this degradation in batteries they make it out like it's linear rather than a diminishing logarithmic curve and you'll have a dead battery to replace 5 years later for $10,000

Basically zero commercially available vehicles are designed to deal with persistent temps below 10f or so. You need substantial modifications to get a normal car to ever reach nominal temps in those conditions. And when your coolant hits 85c, or whatever temp your thermostat cracks open at, and your block gets flooded with a bunch of coolant from your radiator that's sitting at -20c, you're never getting out of your coldstart map.

The only difference was American companies kept trying to churn out a dozen different models, most of which will fail, while the Japs stuck to 3 models in the US. To give some perspective, I have a 1973 F100 with 710k miles. Standard, original transmission and inline 6. Replaced the gearbox once. I also have a 66 Mustang, original 289 V8 (4 barrel), 3 speed standard (rebuilt though it didn't need it...I was just bored). 820k miles. Both run great and are in great shape for being older than the sun, though there is a little rust on the undercarriage. They don't get out much these days, but the point is find me a fucking Toyota from the 60's.

About the only period when they were unreliable, was during the throttle body bullshit years when everyone was switching from carburetors to fuel injection and for some unholy reason this abortion of a hybrid design is what they came up with. But everyone had problems then.

So it doesn't matter much if the battery just sits there for 6 years (although ideally it should be kept at a ~40-60% charge for storage), what matters most for its lifespan is how often it's being recharged and how much it's being recharged to (most battery degradation in lithium ion batteries is happening when you're going from 80% to 100% charge.)

You can basically double a lithium ion battery's lifespan by never charging past 80%.

It has been a great truck. It's a rattle box now and parts are hard to find, but you can't argue with that reliability. It's mostly just something for me to waste my time on when I get tired of sitting in the house.

We also have a 2007 F150 crew cab with 290k on the 4.6L V8 as our 2nd daily vehicle. About the only complaint I had on it was the coil packs going out too often. Always on the #6 cylinder. Eventually found some after market packs that have solved the problem. It still runs so smooth.

Yeah they work pretty much fine in the cold. The only real issue is in extreme cold, like -20F or below. Charging becomes kind of slow at ultra low temps, but its no big deal if you keep it in a garage or precondition. They introduced a new feature this year too where the supercharger can pulse the electric current in the charging cable to warm the battery up if you have an LFP battery, significantly increasing charging speed in ultra cold if you have not preconditioned.

Right to repair

Battery replacement

Spyware

Two of those are purely bad customer service policies they can reverse at any time. The battery issue is really a cost-sharing issue with the customer which Tesla should just bite the bullet on now that they are profitable. Most people don't care much about the other two but the insane cost of the battery is the showstopper for most people.

The funny thing about this is that Tesla sailing will 100% kill the electric car. A lot of electric charger infrastructure is Tesla-branded and would likely end up pulled out in the event of the failure of the company.

And the real reason Tesla sales are dropping right now? Not even to do with all the Leftoid terrorism. It is owners coming to the end of their first battery's lifespan after so relatively short amount of time and getting sticker shock with cost of the replacement battery then telling everyone around them not to buy an EV. And also somewhat to do with right to repair as the cars are starting to age and need repairs and they are realizing they can't just take it to their local mechanic for services and dealing with Tesla's monopoly on service is too expensive, too slow and basically garbage.
