If we can run up the margins in safe blue states that the enemy takes for granted, we can demoralize them and make them divide up their spending more. Imagine how demoralized we would be if we had just barely won Florida or Ohio. It would be a full blown panic trying to claw them back, and it would be very expensive and stressful, and would keep our attention away from swing states. If we can just chip away at them incrementally each cycle, eventually the dam will break and all those states will be in play.
