Putin started to become increasingly autocratic right off the bat in the early 2000s. Part of this was having a puppet in Ukraine you might know, yanukovich, which he heavily pushed ahead of the elections in 2004, to the point of literally travelling to Ukraine and having a military parade. That backfired heavily and made Ukrainians do literally the opposite of what he wanted. Even his attempts of poisoning yanukovichs opponent didn't help.
This is where Putins seethe about Ukraine began. And where things within Ukraine get complicated. While yanukovich didn't win, he did win the follow-up election.
How he did it was two ways: He pretended to be more western, and the opponent was involved with yushenko the then president who kind of fucked up his term. So it yanukovich won and thus putin. The end right?
Well no, since yanukovich ALSO kept fucking up and dropped his charade of being pro western so that it was obvious to the last retard they were duped. This culminated in the 2014 protests where yanukovich fled to him and putin realized it's over for him trying to subtly influence Ukraine, and decided to use force instead. This started with some bullshit referendum on crimea after shipping in troops and also shipping in insurgents and weapons into eastern Ukraine who proclaimed some bullshit independent republic. Why this was possible? Well, eastern Ukraine was always more pro Russian than western Ukraine, so they didn't really care too much, it was mostly peaceful annexation.
Now Ukraine in turn elected the most anti Russian president in their history, who then wanted to quell the eastern independence bullshit, as any self respecting nation would want to do. This wasn't as easy as expected since Russia provided steady support to the insurgents and Poroshenko basically failed, leading to a more or less frozen front.
