I was a kid playing FF7. This was my first large numbered game. I was glad I got to follow most of the story without having played FF1-FF6. I didn't understand how FF8 wasn't FF7+1.

I hated ff7 so I dropped the whole franchise there.
Wasn't very good. 9 was a way better RPG and it was started halfway through 8's development because the development team knew they had a turd on their hands. After 7, 8 was an utter failure and has the weakest mechanics and story of any installment other than X.

the junction system being how you truly power up and not being tied to exp or battles just was a step too far in trying to be different. leveling up punishing you by having level scaled enemies was another blunder. The GF abilities, card and item refinement system was kind of neat, but the game did a piss poor job of walking you through any of it. and the laguna side story also comes out of nowhere and then just screws up all the flow. it resolves nicely late in the story, but it's not a smooth intro.

I disagree, I think it works perfectly. Before people knew the mechanic it made it hard for people that enjoyed the game and made it easy for nubs that werent that interested and didn't explore (so their xp went up less)

It was great except for the whole siphoning system. That was a pain in the ass, multiple prolonged fights just for the sake of siphoning over and over

I just fired up the old 64 and am rocking some ocarina of time. I’m not going to try to dig the PS out or find my memory card or get pissed that disc 3 of 4 is scratched to shit now just to play final fantasy. My DS still works but I have to leave it on the charger. Might bust out some IV now.

I played it when it first came out and outside of the music I was meh. In retrospect it was a lot better then the crap that came after. 9 was great.
Hero had less redeeming qualities then Cloud. Rinoa was annoying.
Rest of the cast was forgettable.
Despite that it aged well.
It was super confusing when you go from FF on NES and then what was “final fantasy 2 and 3” on SNES then all of a sudden it’s final fantasy 7 and you gotta get a PlayStation? Fuck that shit.
7 was and is for fucking posers who never played 1, 2 or 3.

I was born in 88 and didn't get a PS1 until FF8 had been released. I saw ad for it in game magazines and played a demo of it on a demo disc. FF8 was my introduction to the franchise. I played FF7 after 8 and they are very, very different games. As a youngster I didn't enjoy FF7. In h later teen years I played 7 and enjoyed it quite a bit.
FF8 still holds a special place in my heart. I played countless hours and at one point I acquired a strategy guide and did that entire game 100%. I got all the cards, gained all the GFs, learned all the skills, it was magical.
The combat was terrible. That's all it takes to be shit. I don't even remember the story, and all the little extra things seemed pointless due simply to the fact that the game wasn't challenging. At least 7 had things like the arena and emerald weapon to keep things interesting. 8 was just a pushover from beginning to end.
Would have been much better. Rinoa being a sorceress would have made the time loop cleaner.
It killed the entire series. It never recovered.
