One swift WWIII over the course of about 1 year of intense bombing and drone campaigns will reset the world order in what seems like overnight.

Pretty much this. The only way to truly "win" would have been to do things we weren't willing to do. That's pretty much true for every U.S. conflict since WWII. Unless western nations are willing to decimate an entire people (which they won't), everything just ends up in eternal insurgency until we give up and leave.
