My early 90's truck currently has propane in the AC. It works, but isn't a good match, as it has high pressures on high side and low temps on low side. I tried a different throttling valve without much effect. I think isobutane (R600a?) would basically be perfect.

Propane is just super cheap if you are working on / repairing a beater. As far as I know it is compatible with all refrigerant oils.

Try to live in the American South, more specifically the Gulf Coast. It's routinely in the 90s F (30s C) in the day and might dip down to the low 80s night, all while having 70-90% humidity. Sweating does not cool you off. It actually just makes you feel hotter. At night it'll be warm and kind of muggy. But sleeping is fine because 99.9% of everyone has AC. I'll say this about northern European weather. For some reason the number that the temperature is means very little and can only give you a vague idea about what it feels like outside. Just because it's 21 C doesn't mean it'll feel any particular way. If it's cloudy and humid it can feel cool. If the sun's out it can feel hot. A real pain in the ass actually.

The problem with the smart toilets is that the bidet is run on a pump and doesn't produce enough pressure. If you just use a bidet seat attached directly to the water supply, the house water pressure is good enough to get your ass thoroughly clean. I think it had R12, but to change between the 2 you select a different metering valve / orifice tube. (red vs blue plastic thing with an embedded small oriface). Unfortunately you also have to flush the system of the old oil to go from R12 to R134A.

Propane is compatible with both oils, so I used that to figure out what was wrong. It turns out the compressor had broken internally. With that replaced and the system flushed it is working with propane - with frost out the vents because it is too cold on the low side while at 300psi on the high side.

The only problem with Fujitsu is that the blower of the inside unit is simply not removable and ig you use it year round as I did (heating and cooling) you will need it pressure washed in a few years and that will probably leave stains on your wall even with that bag on it.

Yes, in defrost mode the AC is running* (see below). It is dehumidifying the air, so pulling the condensate off the window surfaces much faster. In winter the low side temperature may be low enough that the compressor is prevented from actually turning on by a pressure switch. But in summer for defrost to work, you really need the AC component of the system.

For the 80's and 90's stuff I have worked on when you are in AC mode or in defrost mode the AC compressor has power available to it (limited by the pressure switch above). The heat knob/ control changes a valve that regulates how much engine coolant (or cabin air) is running though a separate heat exchanger (the heater core), raising the temperature to what you want. Engine heat is 'free' and this overall design is just super simple and worked well.

Minisplits are becoming more common in the midwest US. I see them quit often. I have a couple in my own home when my central AC died i bought the tools and just installed them myself. Easy to do if you have the vacuum pump/gauges, flaring tools, etc. I've used mine in the winter even in very cold weather. I think last winter it was still pumping out some heat at -17F outdoor temp. In summer they work amazing for AC. I also have a heatpump hotwater heater that basically provides free hotwater in summer months since i would be using AC anyways.
