I think what happened is that in the 90s the way the equipment was going (complexity, cost etc.) It was going towards a finance oriented market. And Deere saw it and focused on that aspect early with their dealers. From what I understand at the time the actual products were all very comparable.

I have a front tine tiller i use to keep the weeds out from between my rows. I use a plow and a disc to get the ground ready not the tiller. To use this even halfway properly they need to set that little metal thing hanging down in the back to probably max length and stick a lock nut in it. That is what I did and it works a lot better. Otherwise they try to pull your arms off.

The same would happen to most of the people mocking him were they to use it on that ground, those tillers are not remotely built to break through completely solid ground. They're meant for things like backyard gardens that are already loose soil.
Addendum: My dad always called these machine "dirt flippers" for this same reason. He'd always use one of those lawn-mower pulled trailer plow things to loosen anything that wasn't the vegetable garden before having me run the tiller over it because he said I'd either have to try way harder or the machine would burn itself out way faster than normal from the stress.
