The ancient Greeks had the most sophisticated religion and philosophy, they were the absolute pinnacle of human culture. Their mythology is rich and deep, their view was polytheistic, with the gods serving as basically archetypes for specific areas. The gods were also associated with planets, if you look into astrotheology, it's plausible that the planets have certain affects on human life, their different alignments could definitely provide different energetic waves of fate which effects a baby when it's born.
In my opinion the gods are just souls which have ascended past the human level, they are not entirely good or bad, they have nuance just like humans. If you factor evolution and reincarnation, it's very plausible that there exists beings which are past the human stage, traditionally these gods help humans by teaching them, basically helping the noobs along their journey of developing their souls
