I'd like to discuss "g*ngst*lking" in this thread, though I'd also like to call it what it *really* is, modern zersetzung. Zersetsung is what was used in the Soviet Union and specifically East Germany as a method of psychological warfare against citizens. The wiki for zersetzung is fairly good and explains it well, so I will share the link below:

Lastly, before the rest of the information, I know that some *actually* insane people exist. That is what makes these tactics so insidious. They mimic classical delusions and more. This is clearly intentional, as in the original zersetzung where they did the same things and called victims schizophrenic, too: sluggish schizophrenia. But just because some people are actually inflicted with mental illness does not mean that modern zersetzung isn't real, just as the existence of some real mental illness didn't prove that original zersetzung was fake.

I don't know how many people they use or "assign" to a target, and it likely varies from case to case. They also largely don't use actual "agents", they rely on their citizen and criminal informants. Most of it isn't even to harm or attack the target, that's a side benefit. The real goal is to stop the spread of ideas, speech, and practices they consider a threat to their system. They are able to obtain the aid of many people against specific targets through the spreading of malicious rumours centred on the target. Much of the intended effect of such attacks has nothing to do with the target in the first place - they want to scare other people into compliance and create a spectacle to vilify and ridicule the ideas and beliefs they find threatening so as to stop dissidents from growing in number.

The level of intelligence available to them in the modern era makes all this very quick and easy, relative to any other period of time. They will know almost everything about you if they target you, and what they don't know they will learn during the targetting.

I wish there were some other way to explain how they operate but this is the one. They have copied the original Zerzetsung wholesale and with almost 1:1 accuracy and applied it with modern technology (including some stuff not available in general to the public).

The intelligence organizations were massive and very powerful within East Germany. They would lie and spread rumours about targets, such as that the target was a drug user or a paedophile or whatever worked, and thee malicious rumours would be used to enlist criminal and citizen informants who would provide continuous Intel on the target. Ideally, at first, the target would be unaware of all of this occurring. Eventually it wouldn't matter if they became aware, and most did, because the character assassination would be complete and they would have turned everyone in the target's life against them. They would also paint the target with psychological labels, such as the psychiatric term used only in the Soviet Union: sluggish schizophrenia. It meant a progressive schizophrenia that the target was afflicted with that required no symptoms and was just assumed to be there, in essence. Any dissident targeted through their operations could *try* to speak up or defend themselves, but they would likely simply be hospitalized and shut up that way, especially with their friends and family often turned against them by that point.

When you get right down to it, people will go along with extremely evil things for many different reasons. Without the aid of the citizen and criminal spy networks, none of Zersetsung would have been possible. At least it would have been extremely difficult and resource intensive. But by having 1/10 people acting as informants (which they do something similar today, too), they were able to have near perfect intelligence and control of large numbers of people down to the individual level.

As applied by the Stasi, Zersetzung is a technique to subvert and undermine an opponent. The aim was to disrupt the target's private or family life so they are unable to continue their "hostile-negative" activities towards the state. Typically, the Stasi would use collaborators to garner details from a victim's private life. They would then devise a strategy to "disintegrate" the target's personal circumstances—their career, their relationship with their spouse, their reputation in the community. I have personally been targeted via these tactics, as have many others, and I therefore see them it as obviously real. You won't understand that it's far more than the social media mobs without further research or examining my image.

Unfortunately, the things I need to talk about and spread awareness of are extremely complicated and require a great deal of effort and time to explicate or understand. Additionally, there is so much background contextual info that is required to actually think appropriately about this stuff.
