Either because a position needed to remain vacant for women because of diversity quota's, which really pissed off and burned a lot of men. This won't happen anytime soon, but you are correct. The Syrian conflict is about European access to Mid East energy. I wouldn't rule out additional regime change in Syria though and I wouldn't assume Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah won't have a say in the future of the region. We saw how effective Iranian affiliates are most recently in Yemen. Syria is at a temporary pause because the larger nations have bigger priorities, but the conflict is far from over.
