2. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in the early 90s gave the belief that the West had entered a new era of free markets that would lead to ever-increasing prosperity.

Coupled with the approaching millenium, there was an palpable optimism in day to day life in the West, that was largely disillusioned by the events of September 11th, Iraq War, 2008 financial crisis, COVID, etc.
