20 years ago video games were reaching the mainstream and it was normal for every kid to buy a new game every few months, or at the very least on their birthday or christmas. it could be any kind of game. from the big releases at that were promoted on gameinformer or some movie shovelware that grandma thought would be a good gift
even when yearly AAA games started being more of a thing normies would still at least buy the yearly call of duty, assassin's creed, or sports game slop with them only sometimes branching out of that and lots of games were still made trying to chase that market.

I have an almost 19 year old autistic nephew. He plays either Minecraft on the Switch, or Smash either on switch or Gamecube. Every Christmas he gets about 4-5 expensive new games. He doesn't even open most of the games. He has only opened 2 that I know of. He opened Cult of the Lamb, but never played it, and he opened Cities Skylines (which he was very excited to get), played it once, and after seeing that it was complicated, he never played it again.

The other day, his (even more autistic) 9 year old brother was playing Minecraft on the Gamecube. "I didn't know you could do that," I hear older nephew say. I look, and the younger one is just building a bridge by placing blocks down to walk on. I wasn't sure what exactly he meant at first, because younger nephew was doing something so basic.

Apparently older nephew thaught you HAD to crouch, turn around and slowly back toward the edge in order to place a block. The way younger nephew does it (placing the block where you're going to walk) is basically anyone's first instinct, but older nephew saw other people doing it that way, so he thought you HAVE to do it that way. In fact, in the over 10 years he's been obsessed with Minecraft, he hasn't built anything of his own creation. He looks up Minecraft builds and copies them. Same with Legos. He follows the directions to build them, and never touches the (very expensive) set ever again.

Now, this might be just because he's autistic, but I have observed similar behavior in other kids his age. They are unwilling to solve problems on their own or think creatively. Mario hasn't really changed in almost 40 years, but I still buy all the games and play them and have done so since 1989.
