If it's just that in a vacuum then you do have a trade deficit with me, and that's a problem if you don't have any other major export surpluses to offset that deficit.
To put it in layman terms, you're living off of savings. Eventually your saving run out. Eventually you will run out of wealth if you don't stem the flow of wealth out.

You're not selling coconuts, you're essentially selling the coconut trees. For instance, the US used to have the largest steel industry in the world (coconut trees) from which they would export steel (coconuts, the product of the industry) and this brought wealth into the US from abroad.
Then an upstart island (China) started their own steel industry (coconut tree farms) and started selling steel (coconuts) for much less to undercut our island and they could do it because their island didn't mind living in squalor. Their steel (coconuts) was inferior in every way but people didn't care.
Even companies in the US started replacing US steel with inferior Chinese steel just because it was cheaper - something tariffs would have helped prevent.
Now the US steel industry is basically non-existent in comparison. We didn't protect our coconut trade so our trees died from neglect.
