I had a house built and it's a fucking nightmare and I see why houses are so expensive now. There's a shit load of red tape and regulations, like I had to provide a portable toilet and canteen for some reason. Trades will do half a job then run of materials then piss off for a week while they do a job somewhere else, then you've got trades waiting on each other - like the joiner fucked off so the plasterer can't get started and then he ends up going somewhere else by the time the joiner finally comes back and finishes the work and so on. I had to have a bat survey done because stupidly I was using an old existing building as part of the new house when I should have just knocked it down. I had to get a crane in for like half an hour's work which required a million things, like a site survey, lift plan, appointed person on site in addition to the crane driver - it cost thousands before even getting the crane to turn up. If I ever move house again hopefully prefabs exist or I'll just buy a camper van

I lived in a small apartment housing project that were smaller than pods, but it was far worse because it was inside a building that was full of other people, along with the noise, pollution, and other problems that comes with cramming people into a single building.

If pods are terrible, which they are, then your dystopian vision of the future already happened when apartments were first created. Because apartments are just bigger, worse versions of pods. Either a modular house built in a factory with robots slapped together like lego pieces or shed-to-house conversion, these are the only two viable new builds.

Basically modular houses are the future if they're built right. Nothing special needed to expand them, you just slap another cube on and hook it up. Building an extension on your house could be a 1-day process of calling the guys in, plugging in the cube, and plugging in power, wa-la you've just added another room onto your house.

I don't want to sound dramatic but it's literally that easy and it's superior to any other form of building houses. The only thing that sort of gets close is a shed-to-house where you can live in a shed that cost you 7,000 dollars and slowly (and illegally) upgrade it with basic amenities.
They're typically a massive downgrade to standard houses because they were made shittily with poor materials and craftsmanship, and many of them lack a proper foundation, and they're hard to service - the cycle is just to buy one, let it fall apart, and get another when your shit one is too old.
There was a period of time in america where you could get a shitty old one for free if you had the truck to haul it off because the owners didn't want to pay the lot fees, and they really were that shitty, but it was also affordable.
They're still more prone to mice, wasps, everything inside is built the cheapest way possible for poors, but it's not like they're impossible to live in either. They make good hunting cabins.

Its not, pre-fabricated housing is a meme. On a small scale it kinda works, but its not a better large scale solution than apartment buildings. Large buildings need to be fabricated on site, if everything is constructed at a factory, then transportation logistics become a huge problem. Also code compliance is a major issue; how do you inspect all of the electrical at the factory when its not even connected yet?; plumbing?

Trailers and modular homes arent a new invention, there is a reason why apartment buildings arent constructed like modular homes; its not like nobody has thought of this before.
