We've kind of hit the wall with silicon (Moore's Law is dead) and we're seeing that in bitcoin ASICs as well as the network hashrate is starting to plateau. They need to introduce more economical units in terms of price, power and performance to fill that void and this current gen is one of the last gens they can price gouge unless serious advancements are made in computational technology.
A 4nm process is approximately 20 silicon atoms in width. There's only so much room for improvement now and it's only a matter of time before the market realises this and high-performance cards can be bought in a big box store.
